Untitled, Image of a blind woman
Tintype (Gem tintype), 1870s
Though tiny, this tintype stands for the sitter both ways: it conveys clear evidence of the condition, and yet we see a proud and unyielding young woman facing the camera without reservation.

Viewed without magnification she seems to have dark sockets for eyes, but enlarged as you see here, her finely delineated spectacles (green, yellow, or red, which the tintype sees as dark) provide her a sense of privacy with which to face the world. Her jaunty hat completes the picture.
