West front of the cathedral of Notre Dame, Paris
Albumen print, Carte-de-visite, 1870s
The cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris was the religious center of the city, and considered to be one of the finest examples of French Gothic architecture. The houses seen at the front of the cathedral in this image were cleared away as part of Baron Haussmann's plans to create great vistas by isolating the monuments of Paris.
