NOTE: Bernhardt, the stage name of Rosine Bernard (1845 to 1923), is shown here in a role written exclusively for her in 1884, the Empress of Byzantium in Sardou's "Théodora". The play was as famous for its splendour as for its content. In one scene, Bernhardt appeared in a dress of blue satin with a train four yards long and covered with emboidered peacocks depicted in rubies, emeralds and sapphires.
