Walter S. Bowman (Pendleton, Oregon, United States)
Untitled, Portrait of an Indian child
Collodion print, 1899
With Bowman's name and the copyright date handwritten in the negative. On a card mount. NOTE: The subject of this photograph, based on her costume, is almost certainly Plateau. Her dress is ornamented with rows of dentilium shells that were used as an indication of wealth, and were traded like currency. The beadwork design, with its bold squares and diamonds, is also Plateau. The belt, judging from the length of its leather drops, was probably for an adult, and may have been one of the photographer's props.
