With Wootton's inscription ("Your Friend, & Classmate") to his classmate Grove P. Lawrence; his signature, birth date and place of birth (Rockville, Maryland, September 21, 1837), handwritten in ink on opposing page. NOTE: Wootton was one of the youngest in the Class of 1856, graduating at age 19. In 1861 Wootton enlisted in the Confederate Army 1st Maryland Cavalry, attached to the Army of Northern Virginia. It operated throughout the Civil War, under several different commanders, and participated in numerous engagements. Wootton served with his regiment for 4 years. After the war he resumed his law practice, was elected as State's Attorney for Howard County, MD, for 12 continuous years, and became one of the most respected practitioners of the Maryland Bar.
