With Magruder's signature and inscription "Your Friend and Classmate," date and place of birth (Baton Rouge, Louisiana) handwritten in brown ink on opposing page. Magruder was a member of the Skull and Bones Society, and this photograph shows him wearing the Society's insignia pin on his cravat. Magruder graduated from Yale and two years later received his LL.B from the University of Louisiana. In 1885 he was elected to the Illinois Supreme Court, where he remained until June 1906. He served as Chief Justice three times (1891, 1896 and 1902.) Judge Magruder died in Chicago in 1910.
