|Quarter plate geometric thermoplastic case with raised cameo|
|Thermoplastic case, 1860|
Berg 3-26C1. Scovill Manufacturing Co. manufacturer. The die engraver's name "KEY" is visible on each side: at the bottom edge, 6 o'clock, just to the right of the fleur de lis, case recto; and top edge, 12 o'clock, just to the left of the fleur de lis, case verso . With the original mat, cover glass and case paper printed with Scovill's credit and "Genuine Union Case". The significantly raised central lozenge (a profile of William Shakespeare) shows no sign of wear.
Frederick C. Key made 56 different case dies for Scovill, all in 1860.
A highly unusual (listed by Berg as Very Rare) and beautiful example of case art.
|Condition:||4- (very slight loss near lower left corner [hinge side], case verso; all else: 4)|
