A visitor to the villa in 1874, Mr. J.M. Bassett, a well-known California journalist, wrote, "We doubt if on the continent there is a more delightful view than that which may be obtained from the Sierra Madre Villa, with a spread of two or three hundred thousand acres of fertile lands...diversified as they are by orange and lemon groves and vineyards."
