The whaling bark "Wanderer" run aground off Cutthunk Island
Gelatin silver print (toned), 1924
The "Wanderer" was a famous New England Whaler, built in 1878 In Mattapoisett, Massachusetts, five miles away from the large whaling port of New Bedford. She was the last vessel built in Mattapoiset, and the last whaleship to sail from New Bedford. Sadly, after almost fifty years of whaling, she wrecked on Cutthunk Island. The ship had been anchored offshore preparing to depart when her ground tackle broke in a fierce storm on August 24, 1924.

Interestingly her history included a Hollywood performance as the "Chas. W. Morgan" in the movie "Down to the Sea in Ships" (1922).
