An assemblage from the artist's Cabinet of Curiosities, this daguerreotype sets stark hard edges against subtle colors and shades. Set against the silky background, the skull appears three-dimensional.
Kenneth Nelson has been pursuing the art of the daguerreotype since 1976. His images are in public and private collections worldwide, including the International Museum of Photography at George Eastman House, the National Archives of Canada, the Nelson-Atkins Museum in Kansas City, and the B. P. Bishop Museum in Hawaii. The daguerreotypes presented here were all made since September, 2008 following a nine-year hiatus, and several of these new daguerreotypes have already been acquired for public and private collections.
