New England Amateur (United States)
Untitled, Child standing on a chair, Lake Sunapee, New Hampshire
Cyanotype, 1890 to 1900
This is one of a group of cyanotpes taken at Lake Sunapee, an idyllic nine mile long lake in southwestern New Hampshire. After it became accessible by rail in 1849, the lake became a popular resort spot for vacationists from New York and Boston. By the mid 1850s the Sunapee steamboat era was born--described as "an era of color and excitement at a time when life's pace was slower...". Over the decades commercial vessels on the lake included a horse-drawn boat (introduced in 1854), a 300-passenger side-wheeler, and several steamers.
