|Albumen print, 1867 to 1868|
"Sun Pictures," published in 1870, was written by Ferdinand Vandeveer Hayden, a pioneering geologist of the American West. In the 1860s and 1870s he headed several government-sponsored surveys of the Western territories with the multiple objectives of surveying the geology and natural resources of the area and the route of the new Union Pacific Railroad. Thus, "Sun Pictures" was the first compendium of geological and geographical information about the Rocky Mountain portion of the region traversed by the new transcontinental railroad, from Laramie Wyoming to the Great Salt Lake.
