Gilden, born in Brooklyn, New York in 1946, grew up with a “keen eye for observing urban behaviors and customs.” Over the years he focused on Coney Island and New Orleans, and, beginning in 1984, began to work in Haiti.
He became fascinated with voodoo places, rites and beliefs in that country, and made nineteen visits to the island. His book on Haiti was published in 1996.
In 1998 Gilden became a member of the photography agency Magnum. He has traveled and exhibited widely around the world, received numerous awards, and published ten books. He lives in New York City.
