Minnehaha Falls is a 53 foot waterfall on Minnehaha Creek, a tributary of the Mississippi. The falls became a tourist destination in the 1850s, particularly after the 1855 publication of Longfellow's The Song of Hiawatha. Beginning in the 1880s, the state legislature began acquiring land around the falls to become the first Minnesota State Park.
