Studio portrait of a young Filipina, or South Asian woman, standing
Albumen print, Carte-de-visite, mid 1870s
With the number "3786" handwritten in the negative.

A mysterious image of a lovely young woman whose nationality is difficult to pin down. Most likely, based on her costume and features, she is from the Phillipines, and her photographer may have been Dutchman Francisco van Camp. Her dress, and the fact that she is photographed in a studio, suggests that the subject is well-to-do, but her costume also bears a resemblance to what some have described as "native dress".

It is only fair to point out, however, that other suppositions about her nationality have included Laotian, Vietnamese, Cambodian, and Dutch East Indian.
