The Putnam House was a hotel built by Hubbard L. Hart following the Civil War. Palatka (known as "Pilatka" until 1875) had gained a reputation as a haven for invalids escaping northern winters, and this new hotel catered to this trove of visitors.
On the verso of the mount is a postal-style cancellation mark bearing the information "The Putnam House / Palatka. Fla. March 21 1876."
